FURNITURE TIPS AND TRICKS Take A Look At a Finish Older Than Lacquer

Last month we looked at the paint on the furniture, the most commonly used in the furniture manufactured today. This time we take a look at an earlier finish than varnish, and still preferred by many, lacquer.

Now when I say “paint” I do not polyurethane. We cover that in another column. Lacquer finish is really very old, is used in the East centuries ago. Lacquer is an oil based finish, usually orange in color. It is sold mainly in quartz and gallons. Proponents claim that paint is the best finisher around, better than paint or polyurethane clear finish. It is certainly more durable than paint, and a special formulation is often used for bar tops and other areas where moisture is a consideration and wear finish. Yacht varnish is designed for outdoor use, deriving its name from its original use in coatings spars of sailing ships. Read the rest of this entry »
